You’ve been learning French for several months or years.
Now, you are able to understand my podcast and my videos without too much trouble.
It’s a good sign – it means that you’ve already made huge progress!
But whenever you hear a real conversation between French people, you feel like a beginner again.
They use tons of idioms that you’ve never learnt in your French classes.
They speak way too fast!
And when it’s your time to say something, you feel like you never know the right way to share your message.
Don’t worry: anyone who’s ever learned a foreign language has been through this.
I’ve experienced all these mental blocks myself hundreds of times in English, Spanish and Polish!
I know how frustrating and demotivating they can be.
Luckily for us, the solution is quite simple: you just need (a lot) more practice!
But here comes the real problem: there is very little content that can provide you with this type of training.
Most French courses are either a long list of grammar lessons or boring scripted dialogues that you would never hear in real life.
And even if your French friends are very patient, you probably don’t want to stop them every 10 seconds to ask them to explain a phrase you didn’ get.
But in this course, you can!
In this course, I will introduce you to four of my best friends. They agreed to share with us some personal experiences and important moments from their lives.
You’ll learn to understand them thanks to a step-by-step method I’ve developed.
Every interview comes with two quizzes to understand the topics and learn new vocabulary in context.
Then, you’ll find another video where I focus on the most useful expressions and the differences between formal and informal French, just like in a making-of where a director explains how he shot the scenes.
Since every interview is structured in the same way with similar questions (but different answers), you will have the opportunity to improve your understanding without getting bored.
By watching these videos several times to answer the quizzes, not only will you get an amazing training for your ear, but you’ll also memorize a lot of useful phrases effortlessly.
Hugo’s friends seemed like very interesting people with lots to talk about, I was genuinely excited each time I got to another lesson and could watch another interview.
The quizzes afterwards forced me to re-watch the interviews several times which made me recognize that sometimes I skip over or don’t completely understand what was said as much as I thought I did. By the fourth viewing of each interview, I was definitely parsing out more words and understanding the full breadth of what was said much better.
I listen to a lot of podcasts and YouTube videos in French but almost never more than once, so having to do so with the quizzes really helped impress on how me how useful that can be. If only all the French media I consume came with quizzes like Hugo’s…”
If you have already finished the ‘Build a Strong Core‘ program, then this course will be the perfect next step. If you haven’t, it’s not mandatory but I highly recommend it.
Otherwise, as a rule of thumb, if my recent YouTube videos are the right level for you (not too easy and not too hard), then this program will be the right level, too.
If your current level is B1-B2 (on the CEFR scale).
If you recently started listening to my podcast or watching my YouTube videos and you find them challenging, I’d suggest to take the ‘Build a Strong Core‘ course before this one.
If you are at an advanced level (C1 or above on the CEFR scale) or you find my YouTube videos too easy/slow, then this course may not be the best fit for you.
“After moving to France a year ago I was looking for something to help me make progress in understanding the spoken French I hear in every day conversations.
Using Hugo’s course ‘Raconte ton histoire‘ has helped me enormously. My understanding of natural spoken French has improved and I often find myself using the language I heard in the course in my own French conversations.
Using the conversations in context and breaking down the expressions and grammar has been the most engaging way to learn.
I could happily continue to progress by going through all the course content several more times.”

In order to improve your comprehension, you need to know more words. The most efficient way to do that is by learning vocabulary in context. That’s why in addition to the interviews, I will tell you some fascinating stories about France and French people. In these stories, not only will we come across plenty of very useful words, but you’ll also learn some captivating anecdotes to tell your friends.
But except if you have une mémoire d’éléphant, it’s almost impossible to remember all these new words on the spot. Repetition is key. Luckily, the structure of the course takes this principle into consideration. You’ll discover a new important word in a lesson, and magically, it’ll come back a few lessons later, and probably a 3rd and 4th time to make sure you never forget it!
“The course approaches aspects of French society and culture.
When we find ourselves halfway between intermediate and advanced levels, ‘Raconte ton histoire’ can be a stairway.”
“RTH was a great tool to improve my abilities in French. As usual, I like the way Hugo puts all the information together in a simple and interesting way, not boring at all.
As I was preparing to DELF B2 I found it pretty convenient, because it brings a lot of useful content that can be used in the exam, although this is not its goal, as the course focuses on the “real” spoken French.
Also, the interviews with Hugo’s friends are really cool. They tell nice stories about themselves, which is way better than the classical audio we find in the “methode de français”.
Finally, the thing I like most about Hugo’s program is the way he cares. I’ve been following his work for a couple of months, and it always seems to me he gives his best to make our experience as French learners better.”
Grammar details are among the least important factors when it comes to mastering a language.
That’s why ‘Raconte ton histoire‘, like the rest of the materials I provide, is built around the content.
However a clear explanation can sometimes help correct a mistake we weren’t aware of.
In this course, we’ll focus on actionable grammar topics that can actually help you better express yourself:
— French learners’ most dreaded question: passé composé or imparfait?
— Past participle agreement
— How to use the ‘plus-que-parfait’ tense
— How to use the conditional mode (both present and past)
— The different types of hypothesis and how to stop making mistakes with “si”
— What is the passive form and how can it make your sentences more elegant?
If you’re struggling with some of these, don’t worry. You’ll find plenty of exercises to put them into practice and build your confidence.
“Even though I am a French teacher, I can say that I learned a lot!”
“I am a French teacher in the US and I have been speaking French for a long time, but French is not my mother tongue, so I believe it is important to continuously improve my skills.
When I saw the description of this course, I decided to take it because I had been looking for a course like this for a long time and after taking the first course, I knew that Hugo is an excellent FLE teacher and that this course would meet my needs.
I was not disappointed at all. I found the course to be well thought out and well organized. The interviews or discussions between Hugo and his friends, really the heart of this course, are excellent and perfect for a course at this level.”
I regularly take some online courses myself so I know it can feel lonely.
But not with this one!
By joining ‘Raconte ton histoire‘, you’ll get access to a private group made exclusively for the students – the perfect place to have a quick chat in French and get some extra motivation!
But of course, you don’t have to join the group if you prefer to be a lone wolf!
My courses go a lot more in depth than my free content. They are designed to get one big step closer to the advanced level so the lessons are organized with a clear progression, targeted grammar sections and plenty of activities to practice.
The program is designed for upper-intermediate students (between upper B1 and B2 on the CEFR scale). As a rule of thumb, if the innerFrench Videos are at the right level for you or if you’ve already finished the ‘Build a Strong Core‘ course, then this program will be the right level, too.
It’s not mandatory but I highly recommend it, especially if you still find the innerFrench Podcast challenging.
You’ll get access to your first lesson as soon as you sign up. Then you can go through the lessons at your own pace and take as long as you need to complete the program.
Enrollment typically re-opens every 4 months.
The program is entirely in French, just like my podcast and videos. Translations are provided in the transcription for tricky words and expressions, but the lessons and the grammar explanations are in French. I break things down into digestible pieces to make sure you get everything.
As a teacher, my goal is to see my students make actual progress. So if you don’t get results after joining the program, I offer a 30-day money back guarantee.
You can access the course on your laptop, smartphone or tablet, as long as you have an internet connection.
No, the lessons are recorded and there are no conversation classes. But you can ask us all your questions in the comments, by email or in the private student group.
“Raconte ton Histoire was exactly the course I needed to equip me for the French-speaking world.”
“Like a lot of students, I had been feeling frustrated that despite years of study, I was still floundering when I tried to converse with a French-speaking person or engage with content created for the Francophone world. I’d describe this course as the perfect stepping stone between a classroom and a confident chat.
For me, there are two factors that distinguish it from others: the immersion element and the relevance of content. It’s been so valuable to immerse myself in casual, real French conversation, and be able to listen over and over with Hugo’s insights and guidance.
He has also created interesting lectures which make you forget you’re learning French and focus instead on the engaging content.”
I started teaching French in 2015 at the French Institute in Warsaw, Poland, and then online through the innerFrench Podcast and YouTube channel.
To help learners overcome the intermediate plateau, I then created the ‘Build a Strong Core‘ and ‘Raconte ton histoire‘ courses.
By working with thousands of students from all over the world, I have discovered which methods work best. I am constantly improving my courses to provide the best lessons possible!
After my studies, I started my career as a journalist in Paris. But in 2017, I got bitten by the travel bug so I decided to move to South America.
I settled in Peru, where I became a teacher of French as a foreign language while still writing articles for French medias.
At the end of 2020, I joined the innerFrench team to create content for the podcast and YouTube channel while also helping students from the ‘Raconte ton histoire‘ course!
“Hugo’s course has definitely improved my grasp of the French language…. and given me the confidence to speak it!”
“Building on knowledge gained in Hugo’s first course, ‘Raconte ton histoire’ hones in on comprehension of spoken French, using natural conversations between real French people. This has been invaluable in hearing different accents and the everyday language/expressions that are used nowadays.
The grammar lessons are cleverly weaved into a number of interesting topics on French society and culture, so they are never dry or boring. Hugo’s explanations are clear and easy to understand, whilst multiple quizzes at the end of each section provide ample opportunity to consolidate your learning.
I highly recommend this course to anyone wishing to progress their level of French in an enjoyable and engaging way.”
But it’s also a long journey that can feel overwhelming sometimes.
This course will give you the skills to understand French people and the confidence to share your story with them.
